Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai
I have been to Chiang Mai around 11 years ago and at this time I was only interested in a trekking tour. No doubt, that this was one of the funniest holidays with my little sis but this time we came here with no plans and no expectations and we were extremely positive surprised. Chiang Mai is charming and friendly with cosy cafes, yummy restaurants and lots of guesthouses. You find tourists here in every age class. Most Wat are in walking distance and the offer to explore the area is endless. Bike tours up the hills, cooking classes, White tiger tours, elephant park, Cliff adventure tours, shooting club, kayak expedition…..or what we did, called ‘Flight with the squirrel’. It was so much fun doing abseiling, driving a bike in 1000 metres height in the Thai jungle and zip line 600 metres down from tree to tree. I got you the ‘best of’ below.
During our 5 days in Chiang Mai we took the local bus to Chiang Rai and stayed for one night. No doubt that its more industrial than Chiang Mai but we found a charming area with guest houses and bars with life music. One place to visit is the White Temple. It looks like made in Hollywood, the caste of the White Queen from Alice in Wonderland. It spoils it a bit that its just made for tourists but it still looks quite unique.
Tomorrow we head back to Bangkok and although our first night train experience was not so good, we decided to do it again. This time we will be equipped with food and wine so that no Brits can ruin a good nights sleep….beside Sam!
Next stop is Koh Tao. Cu there.
