Tomorrow we fly to Ushuaia, the southern most city in the world and the starting point for our 10 day cruise to the Antarctic. Since booking this as a last minute deal in October we have had many discussions about what we will see and what to expect. We have had also many talks about taking the correct clothes, it has been a balance between having warm enough layers and what we can carry,  we will find out in a couple of days if we chose wisely or if we will freeze our ass off in the Antarctica wilderness. Regardless it will be an amazing experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Below you find some information to our ship and the itinerary.

mv_ocean_novaThe journey will begin in Ushuaia, Argentina and our ship, the Ocean Nova will sail along the Beagle Channel towards Puerto Williams, Chile, the southernmost town in the world before setting sail to Antarctic land across the famous Drake passage direction South Shetland Islands. From there we will sail to the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula along ice-‐filled fjords and among spectacular icebergs.

The voyage may include visits to sites such as Paulet Island, Hope Bay, Port Lockroy, Petermann Island, Paradise Bay, Deception Island, the Lemaire Channel, all depending on weather conditions before we return to South America with a northbound crossing of the Drake Passage.

Our vessel has a capacity of 71 passengers and Sam and I will stay in a double cabin on the top level. The average temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula area ranges round about 0°C or lower due to to winds. The suggest clothing for Antarctica is very similar to skiing equipment.

• Thermal socks

• Thermal underwear, including sweatshirts and turtlenecks

• Fleece jacket and trousers

• Waterproof hooded parka

• Insulated waterproof trousers

• Thermal gloves or mittens

• Polar cap, hat or balaclava hood

• Swimsuit (for possible hot spring dips)

• Comfortable cloths to wear on board (temperature 20°-‐22°C)

• Comfortable rubber-‐soled shoes to wear on board

A lot of the suggested clothes we will be able to rent in Ushuaia and we sent them already our size and height 2 weeks back.

Now you know as much as we do and everything else we will find out on our way to the 7th continent.

  1. Hallo Sam und Sybille! Ich habe gerade Richard die Details Eurer Antarktisreise vorgelesen. Er beneidet euch sehr (ich weniger – ich wuerde sicher an Bord sterben). Viel Spaß (especially with the rented clothes), wir denken an euch. Bussi Marion

    • Haha.
