On the Road

We are back after our Christmas and New Year break and since Machu Picchu we have travelled along the coast up to the north of Peru.

Our first stop along the coast was in Pisco which is famous for its national drink, the Pisco Sour. The drink is made of grape brandy, egg white, sirup and lime juice and it tastes delicious but we did not only come here for the alcohol. Half an hour from Pisco you find the Peruvian Galapagos. It is an island with millions of birds, seals, penguins and pelicans which gave us an idea of how the Galapagos in Ecuador might be. I found it interesting that every 7 years the bird poop is collected by hand and used for plant fertilisation.

One day before Christmas we reached Lima, the capital of Peru. The historical inner city of Lima got us a little bit in the Christmas spirit with its decoration and songs. The Cathedral de Lima is the capitals first church and built in 1535, it had been rebuilt numerous times due to earthquakes in 1551, 1622, in 1687, 1746 and in 1940. The Plaza de Armes is surrounded by palms and canary yellow buildings and in earlier days it served as market and execution site.

Moving further north we took a bus to Trujillo and Huanchaco, the site of the great prehistoric Moche and Chimu cultures before the Inca conquest. For New Year we decided to do nothing beside relaxing with a book on the beach, drinking beer and enjoying the local fish (some more than others). Instead of a partying we enjoyed a bottle of red wine and let the old year pass.

Our last stop in Peru is Mancora, a small beach town on the Pan American Highway and the heart of authentic Peruvian and Latin American cuisine. The area is known for its attractive turquoise beaches and good waves, making it a famous surfing destination. We spent most of our time here planning the next few weeks in Ecuador, the Galapagos and Cuba……and more drinking!!!

Tomorrow should be our first day in Ecuador which we are both very excited about as we are getting closer to our trip to the Galapagos Island and our weeks diving adventure.
